The words “pet insurance” are thrown around quite a bit these days.

You can’t watch five minutes of TV without seeing a commercial with a lady in an apron, an Australian reptile, or a moose with a leather jacket trying to tell you about insurance.

"puppy

OK, I made that last one up, but it would still make a great insurance spokesman.

However, there’s a reason that people talk about insurance so much: you absolutely need it.

It keeps you protected in case the worse might happen, making it an ideal safety net for your car, personal health, or house.

But something people don’t talk about nearly enough is pet insurance.

In fact, I’m pretty sure most people don’t even know it exists.

There have most likely been more commercials made about boat insurance than pet insurance.

And more people might know that Julia Roberts has her teeth insured than know about the existence of pet insurance.

(Consider that your celebrity fun fact for the day.) However, it certainly exists, and it’s something important to consider.

But instead of me blathering on and giving more celebrity fun facts (did you know that Alec Baldwin and Billy Baldwin are brothers?) let me tell you about why pet insurance is worth considering.

Let’s take a look at the six reasons that pet insurance might be right for you.

  1.

Vets Can Be Very Expensive Without Insurance

Taking your dog to the vet is a vital part of pet ownership. We’ve all known that since we became pet owners. I’m sure we all spent a considerable amount of our youths playing stuffed animal hospital with dreams of growing up to be a vet only to discover that it takes a whole lot of work and determination to be a veterinarian (and then decided to get into writing instead. Or maybe that was just me).

Where was I? Oh yes, pet healthcare.

    "6

Since pet health care has evolved and gotten more sophisticated and efficient, it has also become more expensive. Are the evil corporations to blame? Probably not, but let’s blame them anyway. The costs of pet care may have risen significantly, but it’s for good reason. You see, X-rays haven’t always been available for pets. Or even for humans for that matter. I’m not sure exactly when they were invented, and I don’t feel like doing the research. So there.

The point is if your dog broke its leg in, say, the 1820’s they’d probably just give it some leeches and hope for the best. Let’s just say things have gotten a little bit better. Because pet healthcare can now cure so much more, it makes sense that it would be more costly. And, without insurance, that can really hit you in the wallet.

    1.

      Accidents Happen

It doesn’t matter if you’ve got the strongest Saint Bernard or the daintiest Chihuahua, accidents happen. You can’t watch your pets 24/7 to make sure that nothing bad happens to them. Unless you have one of those hidden cameras watching them. But they might be kind of creeped out by that.

      "new

Accidents can and may happen, meaning you need to be ready. Let’s go over some of the more common injuries that may befall your dog. (Yes, befall is a word. And, yes, I am using a word a day calendar now.)

One of the most common injuries that constantly keep pet owners in a stressful state is the fear your pet has eaten something it shouldn’t have. Between chocolate, onions, and grapes, there are plenty of regular foods your pet may sneak from the garbage. However, it doesn’t just stop there. Beyond food, you’ll try to keep your pet from eating any medicine or household cleaning products, which can obviously prove very dangerous. While you can try to hide everything toxic from your pet, they will try with all their might to get their hands on whatever you don’t keep in a locked safe.

Beyond the danger of toxic ingestion, physical injuries are fairly common in pets. Whether large or small, your pet is still curious and vulnerable. After all, somebody very wise (and insensitive) once said: “curiosity killed that cat.” I don’t think that guy went on to have an illustrious career writing greeting cards. However, it is true that your playful pet’s adventures can result in the occasional cut, burn or broken bone.

Pets can get injured no matter how careful you are. However, making sure you’ve got the right pet insurance can help to alleviate the anxiety that can come with being a pet owner.

      1.

        Illnesses Happen

OK, I admit that’s not quite as catchy as “accidents happen.” And the many focus groups I tested the title with seem to agree. But I’m not some professional writer, am I? Well, I am, but that’s not the point. The point is that pet insurance is important because illness can be common amongst all pets."dog

Most illnesses with pets are curable, especially if you catch it early. Some of the most common illnesses found with pets are ear and bladder infections, intestinal issues, and even dental diseases.

The scary thing about diseases in your pets is how unexpected it can be. You can have your pets in impeccable shape, with daily walks and vitamins, and the symptoms can still pop up with no forewarning.

The key to catching something wrong with your pet before it gets worse is knowing what signs to look for and when to know it’s time to go to the vet. Some of the signs are pretty obvious, such as (gross word warning) excessive vomiting or diarrhea.

However, not all signs are quite as visible. Or graphic. Keeping tabs on your pet’s food intake can be a sign that something is off. If you can’t keep an eye on your pet to see how much it’s eating at all times, you’re a bad pet parent and should have your dog or cat taken away from you immediately.

OK, I’m kidding. Just check on the bowl every once in awhile.

Keeping tabs on your pet’s energy levels can be another sign that something is off. If you notice your dog doesn’t feel like walking, or your cat doesn’t want to bunt or play with as much enthusiasm as usual, it may be time for a trip to the vet.

While you never want any of these symptoms to pop up, being alert can help you and your pet down the road. And, with pet insurance, you won’t have to worry as much about building costs if you need to pop in for a quick checkup.

        1.

Pet Insurance Is Not Terribly Expensive

And now, the part you’ve been thinking about since you heard the word “insurance.” Money. Clams. Cheese. Green currency paper. That one’s not as catchy.

How much you spend really comes down to what you’d like your coverage to handle. Is injury protection from cuts and broken bones most important to you? Or would you like more coverage from congenital conditions? How much you want to be covered is up to you, and the amount of cheddar you spend will vary. Low-cost basic plans are also available for owners whose pets don’t qualify for illness coverage.

          1. You Can Save Money In The Long Run

            SAVINGS!

Do I have your attention? OK, good. While pet insurance costs money, you can absolutely save money in the long run. Does that mean your dog will start bringing home sacks of money every morning like the Sunday paper? Of course not – that’s ridiculous. At least not from my personal experience.

However, certain plans will save you money regarding trips to the vet. That means that all those X-rays, prescriptions, and tests will ultimately yield savings. Considering a good amount of vet bills without insurance are over $3,000, that’ll be something worth investing. Just make sure you check your coverage plan and exemptions.

            "cat

            1. Your Pets Are The Best Part Of Your Life

Your pet is a vital part of your life. It greets you happily (if it’s a dog) or scowls indifferently (if it’s a cat) when you get home every day. You’ve spent countless hours grooming, walking, and putting silly costumes on your pets. Don’t you think they deserve a little extra care just in case something bad happens? And to repay them for putting such silly costumes on them?

There’s no doubt that you love your pet. And you want to make sure they get taken care of no matter what. Making sure your pet is adequately insured means you can give them the best care possible without the stress of lacking a financial safety net.

What Have We Learned about Pet Insurance?

As we’ve seen today, there are many good reasons to get insurance for your pets. On the financial side, pet care can be very expensive without the right insurance. However, your periodic pet insurance payments can help you save money in the long run. Additionally, no matter how careful you are with your pet, bad things can still happen. Between injuries such as ingestion of toxic materials or broken bones and illnesses such as bladder infections and worse, pet insurance provides a safety net in case something unexpected happens.

Most importantly, your pets are part of the family. They eat all your food, chew on your shoes, and mess on your carpets. But you still love them no matter what. You never want harm to befall them, (there’s that word again!) but you do want to be financially prepared in case something happens.
